It was the morning hours of September 16, 1810. Napoleon's army had just invaded Spain, leaving the government weak and susceptible to a rebel strike. So Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied his troops, rang the bell of his church, and gave the grito that ultimately triggered the Mexican War of Independence. For more than 200 years, El Grito has been Mexico’s battle cry and emphatic celebration of Mexican patriotism, and it’s directly responsible for shaping our binational region forever. To celebrate Dieciséis de Septiembre, we’ve distilled the passion behind the famous call to arms and put it into our newest cocktail – El Grito.
